Festival season!

Hi guys,

So I know I haven't posted in a while, but I do have a good reason. I've been in Poland for the last week at the animation festival Animocje in the lovely town Bydgoszsz (Don't worry, I struggled with the name too!). I was happy to hear that my film "Rumble in the Jungle was selected to be screened there in the children's competition, so I thought I would take the trip down and see the sights and meet some cool people! I loved how the children laughed when my film came on, they are the hardest audience to please and I was really happy over their reactions!

The town had a rich history with great architecture and classic-/modern art. I love how the people embraced both the old and the new, f.ex: You can see a run-down building, but inside it you would find a bakery or a high end jewelry store. If I did have some qualms would be the language problem, since the old generation doesn't speak English, and the younger generation is a little gun-shy about it:/. I had some awkward run-in's with the locals when I had to buy coffee or a bagel, but in the end it's really nobody's fault.

Still, it was a good few days but now I'm ready to head back to Germany. Next on the festival menu, International Trickfilm Festival in Stuttgart! Woop woop!

Orvill - Time for Music (cleaned)

So I finally managed to finish off this little piece. Woop woop!

Watch Orvill play for this rock friend. Orvill is one of the characters from my ongoing children's series concept. He's an inquisitive little green owl. I loved working on this piece, maybe too much so as I kinda neglected my Obscurum project for a few days to finish this. But now I'm happy I did:D.

Shape study 3

Shape study time again:)

I love doing these, it's quite freeing and allows you to just think about crazy shapes and contrast.

Orvill Loop - Rough

Here is a little loop I've been  working on now for a couple of weeks (on and off). Since it's such a short loop, I tried to go more methodical and go straight pose to pose. I liked it, but can see how "boring" it can get if you want to work on a bigger shot this way.

Still a WIP, so stay tuned for the finished version!:)

Doodle time!

Some character doodles:)

I started reading "The Silver Way", the new character design book from Stephen Silver, and he talks about how important it is to just draw without "thinking", which means to doodle for fun and for the sake of just doodling

It's a great way to stay lose and experiment with shapes:)

Portrait 12

Portrait day again!:) Thought I would try and tackle Sir Ian Mckellen, Gandalf himself! Looking at side-by-side, I'm happy with it, but could tweak his eyes and his lips a bit more.

I also decided to not include the hands and just focus on the face this time:)

Young Kuno - Obscurum

So I wanted to share some progress pics from my short film, Obscurum

I just finished the character design of a younger version of Kuno (Protagonist). In the story, Kuno gets flashbacks to his past, and I needed to design him when he was a little more innocent and "wet behind the ears".

Make sure to check out the production blog and feel free to follow me on on tumblr :)

Life drawing 4

It's gesture drawing time again.

I thought I would try some quick 15 sec gestures... in the end I felt it was a bit hard to keep up with the speed, but I felt the sketches started to get a tiny bit better in the end. :)

Portrait 11

A portrait done in Sketchbook pro. Although it doesn't have a the huge brush library as Photoshop, it's a great program for sketches, even for simple cleanup.

Great for quick results:)

Shape study 2

Here is another shape study (from Stephen Silver's tutorials). I tried to stay true to the shapes as much as possible, which was quite hard actually, specially when it came to the hair. But it kinda turned into this little weird, and interesting result... I think I liked the Square and Triangle shape the best.

Will do more of these in the coming days;)
